The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is the most decorated player in history and has now added another continental crown to his collection, as world champions Argentina beat Colombia in the final in Miami.
Messi, who plays for MLS side Inter Miami in Florida, was unable to complete the final after suffering an unfortunate ankle injury. He returned to the bench in tears, before watching Lautaro Martinez score the winner for Argentina.
Messi sent a “one more time” message to his 504 million Instagram followers as he posed with the Copa trophy in his arms. His wife, Antonela, and three sons also joined in the celebrations, posing for pictures on the pitch in Argentina’s No. 10 jersey.
At 37, it will not be easy for Messi to win another title at the national team level. Argentina will have a final against European champions Spain, before starting the defense of the World Cup title in 2026.
