Abandoned giant cat Garfield, named the heaviest cat in the world!

Garfield, a New York-based feline, tips the scales at nearly 40lbs, earning him the title of the world’s heaviest cat. He surpasses Sponge Bob, who weighed a comparably svelte 39lbs, in the heavyweight cat category.

North Shore Animal League America, an animal welfare shelter based in Port Washington, took in the overweight cat after his owner passed away. The organization shared pictures of Garfield on their official Facebook page, highlighting his resemblance to the lazy cartoon character he’s named after.

“Garfield, weighing in at nearly 40 pounds, may very well be the heaviest cat in the world, and he has become a media sensation, much like his namesake from the comics,” stated the adoption organization. However, they also emphasized that Garfield’s size should not be admired. Veterinarians have pointed out that overweight animals can experience significant health problems.

Mark Verdino, Vice President and Chief of Veterinary Staff at North Shore Animal League America, stressed the serious health risks associated with excessive weight, stating, “Just like in humans, carrying too much weight can result in severe health problems. It can lead to diabetes, heart disease, damage to joints, bones, and ligaments, high blood pressure, heat intolerance, and more.”

In response to Garfield’s weight issue, the cat has been placed on a carefully controlled, low-calorie diet and is receiving thorough veterinary care to address his health needs.

“It’s heartwarming to see the organization step in and provide the necessary support to help Garfield lose weight and regain his health. I hope Garfield’s journey towards a healthier life goes smoothly, and he gets the chance to experience a better quality of life. Despite the challenges of adjusting to a diet, it is essential for his well-being. The organization’s efforts to find him a new loving owner demonstrate their commitment to giving Garfield the opportunity for a fresh start.”

The organization is trying to help Garfield shed those extra pounds before they can find him a new owner.

However, even without special treatment, Garfield has managed to shed an incredible 1.5lbs since May – and has almost completely conquered his kibble addiction, now opting for wet, grain-free, low-fat cat food.
